The lapel is the main part of a jacket. Most of the attention in a suit goes to the lapel. So from what kind and size to go for, you need to know all that’s there.
If you want a timeless lapel which you can wear even after 10 years then go for a lapel size which is proportional to your body.
So going by body proportion, a size 36 to 40 can go for the narrow notch lapel which sizes about 2.5”.
40 to 44 sizes go well with the normal notch lapel which is about 3” and
Finally, the 44+ sizes are well too with the broad notch lapel which is 3.5″.
There are 2 broad categories to go for lapels for a timeless look. I’m not including the shawl lapel in it as it is mostly used in tuxedos or very trendy suit jackets or blazers. I’ll cover it in my other articles when required.
So the 2 categories are Notch lapel and Peak lapel.
The notch lapel is the go-to lapel type as it is very versatile and understated. Whether you have to go for an interview or a business meeting, notch lapels make a suit look great whatsoever. They go with the two-piece suit, 3 piece suit, blazers or coats.
The peak lapels are a lot dressier compared to the notch lapel. They are more powerful compared to notch lapels. They are seen equally among the suiting as the notch lapels but they are meant for more statement suits. If you remember the tuxedo worn by Marlon Brando in Godfather, which was a peak lapel tuxedo done by Scabal. So peak lapels are special occasion lapels or more special wear suits.
